  • MÃO NA RODA CURSOS

Pensamento a girar.

    COURSES

Thinking that spins. Mão na Roda (Hand on a circle, in Portuguese) is a programme of education, where courses are offered, interposing visual arts, photography, performance, film, music, literature, dance, circus… It is not exactly one thing or the other, but rather the dialogue between them: the production of thinking in the arts, and aesthetic exercises set on a table.
Sem Título Arte aspires to be this place of access to artistic and cultural education, engaging aesthetic propositions, fostering production, opening windows so that artists themselves can strengthen their works by broadening their universe of references, and that the audience may have access to different ways of making, researching and thinking contemporary art.

Mão na Roda programme creates spaces of coexistence and education, considering the vast production and the diverse ways of experimenting art, making up room for creation processes as they interweave with multiple languages. Art and its traversings: the city, gender relations, technology, the body, politics, and more.

Since 2016, twelve editions of the programme have been conducted with artists-teachers, researchers and theorists of art fields, of artistic processes, art history, sociology, photo book, and questions of performance.

Besides stirring up the local scene, Mão na Roda has also expanded the boundaries of intellectual production by promoting the exchange with nationally and internationally renowned researchers, enabling society with access to very singular courses of art education.

    Exhibitions

Portuguese for rotating, rotary structures, Rotatórias is a programme of exhibitions and aesthetic propositions in the visual arts, with the curatorship of researcher Jacqueline Medeiros, PhD in History and Critique of Art (State University of Rio de Janeiro). Once every 60 days, a visual artist in invited to occupy the gallery space, freely coming up with critical and contemporary interventions for the city. The programme proposes ways of occupying this autonomous art space with a focus on the production and critical thinking of experimental contemporary art.

The solo exhibition of visual artist Eduardo Frota was the first Rotatórias at Sem Título Arte. In 1ª Lição de geometria: o quadrado / Da imperfeição física à desobediência incorporada (1st Geometry Lesson: the square / From physical imperfection to embodied disobedience), of February 2017, Frota proposed an intervention into the exhibition space. By installing a square, he twisted the physical structure, historically rigid, of art galleries, thus fraying the working spatial dynamics of Sem Título Arte. At the same time, there it was: the way Sem Título Arte would work.

After Eduardo Frota’s solo exhibition, Rotatórias programme gathered works of artists invited by curator and State University of Rio de Janeiro professor Marisa Flórido, in Além da Imagem (Beyond Image), questioning the place of painting in contemporary art. The schedule of events also brought propositions by artists active in the state of Ceará, such as Solon Ribeiro, Leonardo Mouramateus and Simone Barreto, as well as the 68th edition of the Fortaleza April Art Salon – Hijacked, an event of protest in face of the City Administration’s neglect towards its public policies for the arts. Currently, the space holds the solo exhibition of Junior Pimenta, presenting the results of his artistic residence at Hermes Artes Visuais, in the city of São Paulo, supervised by Marcelo Amorim, residence director.

    TALK

Meetings with artists, theorists, researchers, designers, poets and writers, which occur at Sem Título Arte, with free entrance. If, on one hand, Na Lona (Portuguese for on canvas, tarpaulin) refers to the precariousness of the arts scene in Brazil, on the other hand, it invites us to the freedom of inventiveness, to create from coming together, just like artists of the Mambembe circus. This programme is marked by the multiplicity of voices that occupy Sem Título Arte. A centre ring of various tones, where the refined literature of poet and Federal Fluminense University professor Manoel Ricardo has stepped its foot, as well as philosopher and São Paulo University professor Massimo Canevacci, and the aesthetic propositions of artists Vitor César, Enrico Rocha, Babidu Barboza (of Grupo EmpreZa), André Parente and Yuri Firmeza, thus tracing a landscape of the contemporary scene from each individual experience. Ricardo Resende, curator of the Bispo do Rosário Museum in Rio de Janeiro, launched the book Posição Amorosa about artist Hudinilson Jr; curator and State University of Rio de Janeiro professor Marcelo Campos launched the book Escultura Contemporânea Brasileira, and Rio de Janeiro-based curator Beatriz Lemos presented her research on the trajectory of artist Marcia X, pioneer in the experimentation of performance in Brazil.

Na Lona programme keeps its doors open, with borders somewhat undefined, moved only by the possibility of coming together and the circulation of thinking about the arts.
